Understanding the Target Audience
We identified a problem within Oral Healthcare, and developed a high level understanding about the audience.
THE PROBLEM
14 million Canadians don’t visit the Dentist due to cost, and lack of accessibility. 33% of Canadians don’t have dental insurance.
Visiting the Dentist is Expensive
It costs around $300 per visit - just for a dental check up, and 30% of Canadians Don’t have Dental Insurance.
People have to take time off of work
It is estimated that 4.15 million working-days for adults are lost annually due to dental visits or dental sick-days,
No alternative to Oral Care
The only way a person can learn about the state of their oral health is by visiting a Dentist.
Solution
SnapSmile is a free app that helps people detect dental issues earlier.
SnapSmile lets people do a dental check up from the comfort of their home. Users upload 5 images of their teeth, following the in app guidance, to get an oral health report and personalized oral health recommendations. Users were able to learn what treatment they’d require, the cost of the treatment, and how they can mitigate the progression of oral health issues from home.
My Responsibilities
Our entire team worked together to chat with Dentists, and people that faced challenges with seeing a Dentist - especially during the lockdown. I was mainly responsible for finding online communities to reach out to people to chat with. I also built our early prototype to test with users.
Research
Finding communities with people that are committed to living a healthy lifestyle, connecting with people to request time for interviews, and conduct user interviews.
Prototyping
Using Figma and Dribble to create a prototype which could be tested with users.
Initial Research
We spoke to 58 people, 3 Dentists and 1 professor that focussed on improving access to oral health care. This helped us gain better insights into why people didn’t visit the dentist, and what gaps existed in the market.
Prototype
We used Figma to put together a prototype that we would later code and launch after testing with 46 users before our launch.
